For a nonconstant holomorphic map f:X→Y between compact connected Riemann surfaces, let n be its degree and ep its local degree at p. The Riemann-Hurwitz formula is
χ(X)=nχ(Y)−p∈X∑(ep−1).
(1)
Equivalently, 2gX−2=n(2gY−2)+∑p(ep−1). Only finitely many terms are nonzero; their sum is the total ramification. In local coordinates the map has the form w=zep after suitable coordinate changes.
