For a regular parametrization r(u,v), the first fundamental form is the induced Riemannian metric
I=dr⋅dr=Edu2+2Fdudv+Gdv2,E=ru⋅ru,F=ru⋅rv,G=rv⋅rv.
(1)
It measures squared lengths of tangent vectors and therefore lengths of curves. In the plane put x=ρcosθ, y=ρsinθ. The derivatives are orthogonal, of lengths one and ρ, so
dx2+dy2=dρ2+ρ2dθ2.
(2)
These polar coordinates are regular for ρ>0.
