On the punctured plane x2+y2>0, write M=−y/(x2+y2), N=x/(x2+y2). Direct differentiation gives
Nx=(x2+y2)2y2−x2=My.
(1)
There is no z dependence or z component, so
∇×F=(0,0,Nx−My)=0(x,y)=(0,0).
(2)
The origin is excluded: the field is undefined there. A zero classical curl away from the origin does not state that the field is smooth on an entire disk containing it.
