Assume 0≤a<R. In cylindrical coordinates, the sphere imposes r2+z2≤R2, and the volume element is rdrdϕdz. The required triple integral is
V=∫−aa∫02π∫0R2−z2rdrdϕdz=π∫−aa(R2−z2)dz.
(1)
Hence
V=2πa(R2−3a2).
(2)
It tends to zero as a→0 and to the full sphere volume 4πR3/3 as a→R, checking both limits.
