Use t=tanu with the inverse tangent branch −π/2<u<π/2. Then dt/(1+t2)=du, so
∫0x1+t2dt=arctanx.
(1)
For ∣t∣<1, the geometric series gives (1+t2)−1=1−t2+t4−t6+⋯. Integrating term by term on compact subintervals of (−1,1) produces
arctanx=x−3x3+5x5−7x7+O(x9).
(2)
The integral identity itself holds for every real x; the displayed local power-series argument uses ∣x∣<1.
