Combine the terms before taking their limit:
x1−ex−11=x(ex−1)ex−1−x.
(1)
Using the exponential function Maclaurin series, the numerator is x2/2+O(x3) and the denominator is x2+O(x3). Consequently
x→0lim(x1−ex−11)=21.
(2)
The cancellation removes the two individual singularities. Subtracting their separate divergent limits would not determine the finite answer.
