Let a=h/2 and place the hole axis along z. At the rim, r02=R2−a2. A horizontal slice at ∣z∣≤a is an annulus of area π[(R2−z2)−r02]=π(a2−z2). Thus the napkin ring problem gives
V=π∫−aa(a2−z2)dz=34πa3=6πh3.
(1)
Each slice depends only on a and z, explaining the independence from the original sphere radius, rather than obtaining it merely by cancellation after integration.
