Given Xn=k, the next size is a sum of k independent reproduction counts. Multiplication of their probability generating functions gives E[sXn+1∣Xn=k]=G(s)k. Averaging this conditional expectation proves
Gn+1(s)=E[G(s)Xn]=Gn(G(s)).
(1)
With one initial individual, G0(s)=s and G1(s)=G(s), so Gn is the n-fold composition of G with itself.
