Write the adjunction as a natural bijection αC,D:D(FC,D)→C(C,GD). The adjunction unit and adjunction counit are defined by
ηC=αC,FC(1FC),εD=αGD,D−1(1GD).
(1)
Naturality of α implies GF(u)ηC=ηC′u for u:C→C′ and vεD=εD′FG(v) for v:D→D′, so these are natural transformations 1C→GF and FG→1D. More explicitly, naturality at f:FC→D and g:C→GD gives the two transpose formulas
α(f)=G(f)ηC,α−1(g)=εDF(g).
(2)
These formulas will also prove the triangle identities for an adjunction.
