A probability density function must integrate to one. Therefore
1=c∫01x(1−x)dx=c(21−31),c=6.
(1)
The first two moments are
EX=6∫01x2(1−x)dx=6(31−41)=21,EX2=6∫01x3(1−x)dx=6(41−51)=103.
(2)
Consequently the mean and variance are
EX=21,var(X)=103−41=201.
