Let x,y∈H and let W be an open neighbourhood of xy−1. Continuity of (u,v)↦uv−1 supplies neighbourhoods U of x and V of y with UV−1⊆W. Choose h∈H∩U and k∈H∩V. Then hk−1∈H∩W, so xy−1∈H. The subgroup criterion using xy−1 proves the closure of a subgroup is a subgroup. The neighbourhood argument avoids assuming the topology is determined by sequences.
