For a homogeneous canonical massless scalar field, the flat Friedmann equation and field equation in conformal time are
3H2=21ϕ0′2,ϕ0′′+2Hϕ0′=0,H=a′/a.
(1)
Put C=3/2. On the negative-time branch, H=1/(2τ), ϕ0′=C/τ and ϕ0′′=−C/τ2. Therefore
3H2=4τ23=21ϕ0′2,−τ2C+τ2C=0.
(2)
Both equations are satisfied. Since a′<0, this is cosmological contraction with a free homogeneous scalar. Its energy density and pressure are equal, so it is a stiff fluid, and the scale factor tends to zero as τ↑0.
