For z=0, write z=reiθ with r=x2+y2>0. The complex logarithm has values lnr+i(θ+2πk), k∈Z. Therefore
Re(logz)=21ln(x2+y2),Im(logz)=θ+2πk.
(1)
For a specified single-valued branch, choose the corresponding continuous determination of the argument. In particular, the principal value uses Argz∈(−π,π]; it is not represented correctly by arctan(y/x) in every quadrant. The complex logarithm is undefined at zero.
