Extend the selected ℓ1 to an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors, writing it as v1. For a unit vector orthogonal to it, a1=0, and therefore
Var(ℓTX)=∑j=2pλjaj2≤λ2.
(1)
A unit eigenvector v2 attains equality. Thus ℓ2 is a unit eigenvector for the largest eigenvalue on ℓ1⊥, and the maximum is λ2. If the largest eigenvalue is repeated, a second orthogonal vector in that eigenspace is allowed and λ2=λ1; there is no uniquely determined first pair of directions.
