By orthonormality in the Generalized Bloch representation,
Tr(ρ2)=N1+∑k=1N2−1sk2.
(1)
A pure state has density operator ρ=∣ψ⟩⟨ψ∣ with ⟨ψ∣ψ⟩=1, so ρ2=ρ and its purity of a density operator is one. Consequently
∥s∥2=1−N1.
(2)
Every pure state therefore maps to the specified radius-1−1/N sphere in RN2−1, of dimension N2−2. The expansion is unique, so it distinguishes pure-state density operators, while vectors differing only by global phase describe the same point. This proves that pure states lie on the sphere, without asserting that they fill it.
