Let H=a˙/a be the Hubble parameter, and normalize the scale factor by a(t0)=1. The cosmological continuity equation gives ρM=ρM0a−3 for pressureless matter, whereas the cosmological constant has constant energy density ρΛ. The spatially flat Friedmann equation therefore becomes
H2=38πG(ρM0a−3+ρΛ).
(1)
The present Hubble constant is H0=H(t0). In terms of the present critical density ρcrit,0=3H02/(8πG), the matter cosmological density parameter is ΩM=ρM0/ρcrit,0. Spatial flatness gives ρΛ/ρcrit,0=1−ΩM, so
(aa˙)2=H02[a3ΩM+1−ΩM].
