For the FLRW metric in conformal time, −g=a4, g00=−a−2 and gij=a−2δij. The equation for a minimally coupled massless scalar field is consequently
−(a2δϕ′)′+a2∇2δϕ=0.
(1)
For a Fourier mode of comoving wavevector k, the Laplacian contributes −k2, where k=∣k∣. Thus
δϕk′′+2aa′δϕk′+k2δϕk=0.
(2)
Since a′/a=−1/τ, this yields
δϕk′′−τ2δϕk′=−k2δϕk.
(3)
The absence of a curvature-coupling term is material: a conformally coupled scalar field obeys a different mode equation.
