Let νc be the photon frequency in the local comoving frame just after emission. The kinematic redshift gives νe/νc=1+zkin, and propagation in the FRW metric gives νc/ν0=1+zcosm. Multiplication gives
1+ztot=(1+zcosm)(1+zkin).
(1)
Equivalently, ztot=zcosm+zkin+zcosmzkin. Both redshifts being small is what permits their approximate addition. Here the observer's own peculiar velocity is assumed already corrected to the Hubble flow frame.
