Motion toward incoming cosmic microwave background radiation produces a blueshift. The photon occupation function of a blackbody depends on hν/(kBT), so the same Doppler factor multiplies both frequency and effective temperature. Looking forward along the Sun's peculiar velocity, one obtains
Tforward=T01−β1+β≃T0(1+β),β≃300/(3×105)=10−3.
(1)
Taking the mean cosmic microwave background temperature as about 2.73K gives
ΔTforward≃2.7mK,Tforward≃2.733K.
(2)
The numerical total inherits the rounded mean temperature; the robust estimate is the positive millikelvin dipole increment.
