Let v=0 be an eigenvector of the Hermitian matrix A, with eigenvalue λ. Multiplying Av=λv by v† gives
λ=v†vv†Av.
(1)
The denominator is the positive real number ∥v∥2, while
v†Av=v†A†v=v†Av.
(2)
Thus the numerator is real, and every eigenvalue of a Hermitian matrix is real. This argument does not require distinct eigenvalues.
