Expand the two central second-difference operators. The given stencil identity yields
Γ9u=h2Δu+12h4Δ2u+h6[360uxxxxxx+uyyyyyy+72uxxxxyy+uxxyyyy]+O(h8).
(1)
Consequently its unnormalized local residual is Γ9u−h2f=(h4/12)Δf+O(h6). The normalized Laplacian approximation has leading error (h2/12)Δf and is second order. These Taylor statements require the indicated smooth derivatives; boundary accuracy is a separate matter.
