The partial derivatives of f are fx=2x, fy=4y(a−y2) and fz=2z. Therefore the three implicit differentiation formulas are
(∂y∂x)z=x2y(y2−a),(∂z∂y)x=2y(y2−a)z,(∂x∂z)y=−zx.
(1)
Their product is −1 wherever xyz(y2−a)=0. The excluded factors identify exactly where these quotient formulas cannot all represent finite partial derivatives.
