Finiteness of the moment-generating function on an open neighborhood of zero gives its differentiability there. Using the permitted interchange of differentiation and expectation,
MX′(t)=E[XetX],MX′′(t)=E[X2etX].
(1)
Hence MX(0)=1, MX′(0)=μ and MX′′(0)=s2. The second-order Taylor expansion with its Peano remainder gives
MX(t)=1+μt+21s2t2+o(t2).
(2)
Here s2 is the raw second moment, not the variance: Var(X)=s2−μ2. This distinction matters before specializing to a centered variable.
