Axisymmetry preserves the horizon, so the axial Killing vector field m is tangent to it, so its null normal ξ=k+Ωm obeys ξ⋅m=0 and ξ2=0. Therefore k⋅m=−Ωm2 and
0=k2+2Ω(k⋅m)+Ω2m2=k2−Ω2m2.
(1)
Thus k2=Ω2m2 there. A generator has dt/dα=1, dφ/dα=Ω, making Ω=dφ/dt its angular velocity relative to the nonrotating stationary frame at infinity. For Kerr it is the Kerr horizon angular velocity a/(r+2+a2); the argument itself is not Kerr-specific.
