The error indicator is a Bernoulli random variable with probabilities P(Z=1)=pe and P(Z=0)=1−pe. Its Shannon entropy is therefore the binary entropy
H(Z)=h(pe)=−pelog2pe−(1−pe)log2(1−pe).
(1)
Use 0log20=0, so this expression also covers error probabilities zero and one.
