For the moving-average process of order one, γ(0)=σ2(1+θ12), γ(1)=σ2θ1, and γ(2)=0. Regressing each endpoint on the single intervening observation leaves residual covariance γ(2)−γ(1)2/γ(0) and residual variance γ(0)−γ(1)2/γ(0). Therefore its lag-two partial autocorrelation function is
α(2)=1−ρ(1)2ρ(2)−ρ(1)2=−1+θ12+θ14θ12.
(1)
The denominator is positive. In particular, the moving-average autocorrelation cutoff at lag one does not make the lag-two partial correlation zero unless θ1=0.
