The Box-Muller transform uses independent uniforms to set
R=−2logU2,A=2πU3,X1=RcosA,X2=RsinA.
(1)
The radius has the unit Rayleigh distribution, with density re−r2/2 for r>0, and the angle is independently uniform on [0,2π). Their joint density is (2π)−1re−r2/2. The Cartesian change of variables has absolute Jacobian determinant r, so the joint density of (X1,X2) is
2π1e−(x12+x22)/2=(2π1e−x12/2)(2π1e−x22/2).
(2)
The factorization proves that the outputs are independent random variables, each with a standard normal distribution.
