b
Part (a) implies [A^,B^]=2mℏω. Since H^=B^A^/(2m)+ℏω/2, it follows that
[H^,A^]=2m1[B^A^,A^]=−ℏωA^.
(1)
For an eigenfunction ϕ of the Hamiltonian with eigenvalue E,
H^(A^ϕ)=(E−ℏω)A^ϕ.
(2)
Thus A^ is a ladder operator lowering the energy by ℏω, provided A^ϕ=0. The zero function is not an eigenfunction; in particular the ground state is annihilated by this operator. This qualification is essential for the later argument.
