The real and imaginary parts of the operator are uniquely
α1=2α+α∗,α2=2iα−α∗.
(1)
They are self-adjoint operators, and α=α1+iα2. Conversely such a decomposition has α∗=α1−iα2. Expanding both products gives
αα∗−α∗α=−2i(α1α2−α2α1).
(2)
Consequently α is a normal operator exactly when its self-adjoint real and imaginary parts commute.
