Take the curl of the linear momentum equation. For constant Ω and zero divergence, ∇×(Ω×u)=−(Ω⋅∇)u. With Ω=Ωez, this gives
∂tω=2Ω∂zu.
(1)
Take another curl and use part (a): −∂t∇2u=2Ω∂zω. Differentiate in time and substitute the previous equation:
−∂t2∇2u=4Ω2∂z2u.
(2)
Consequently
∂t2∇2u+4Ω2∂z2u=0.
(3)
The two curl operations remove the pressure gradient while retaining the rotational restoring force.
