For the off-diagonal moves, the Metropolis–Hastings acceptance probability gives
π(x)q(y∣x)α(x,y)=min{π(x)q(y∣x),π(y)q(x∣y)}.
(1)
This expression is unchanged by interchanging x and y. The rejected-move measure π(dx)r(x)δx(dy) is supported on the diagonal and is also symmetric. Therefore the whole transition measure satisfies
π(dx)K(x,dy)=π(dy)K(y,dx),
(2)
which proves detailed balance, including the atom that an off-diagonal density alone would omit. Consequently the Metropolis–Hastings algorithm kernel preserves the normalized target measure.
