Put U0=1, so the same definition zn=xn/Un−1 includes n=1. Since Un=anUn−1 and every an is nonzero,
zn+1=Unanxn+bn=zn+Unbn.
(1)
The factor Un−1 is a discrete integrating factor for this variable-coefficient affine recurrence. Sum the increments as a telescoping series and multiply back by Un:
zn+1−zn=Unbn,xn+1=Un(x1+j=1∑nUjbj).
(2)
The identity requires no assumption that the coefficients have the same sign.
