Let A be the adjacency matrix of a graph and Av=λv with v=0. Choose a vertex i maximizing ∣vi∣>0. Then
∣λ∣∣vi∣=∑j∼ivj≤deg(i)∣vi∣≤Δ∣vi∣.
(1)
Dividing gives
∣λ∣≤Δ.
(2)
This argument works even with a complex eigenvector; for a finite undirected graph the matrix is real symmetric and all eigenvalues are real.
