An orthonormal wavelet is a function whose integer translates and dyadic dilates
ψj,k(x)=2j/2ψ(2jx−k),j,k∈Z,
(1)
form an orthonormal basis of the Hilbert space L2(R). Thus their pairwise inner products are δj,j′δk,k′, and their closed linear span is the whole space. Equivalently, every f∈L2(R) has the norm-convergent expansion
f=j,k∑⟨f,ψj,k⟩ψj,k,∥f∥22=j,k∑∣⟨f,ψj,k⟩∣2.
(2)
The factor 2j/2 preserves the L2 norm under dilation.
