b
Proceed by induction on d=degf. A nonconstant polynomial over a field has an irreducible factor h. Part (a) gives an extension k1/k containing a root α1 of h, hence of f. The factor theorem gives
f(X)=(X−α1)f1(X),f1∈k1[X],
(1)
where f1 is monic of degree d−1. Apply the induction hypothesis over k1 and compose the resulting field extensions. The final field F contains roots α1,…,αd and
f(X)=i=1∏d(X−αi).
(2)
Equivalently, every polynomial has a splitting field.
