For the relative position r=r1−r2, Newton's law of universal gravitation gives the two-body problem in its reduced one-body form,
r¨=−r3μr,μ=G(M1+M2).
(1)
Taking the dot product with the relative velocity v=r˙ gives
dtd(21v2)=−r3μr⋅r˙=dtd(rμ).
(2)
Integration therefore yields conservation of specific orbital energy:
21v2−rμ=C.
