For fixed endpoint values, the first variation of the functional
I[z]=∫abf(z,z′;x)dx
(1)
vanishes exactly when the Euler-Lagrange equation
dxd∂z′∂f−∂z∂f=0
(2)
holds. If f has no explicit x dependence, differentiation along an extremal gives the Beltrami identity
f−z′∂z′∂f=constant.
(3)
For a further constraint J[z]=J0, introduce a constant Lagrange multiplier λ and apply the Euler-Lagrange equation to I+λJ; λ is then chosen so that the constraint holds.
