Set
Γ(t)=σ(t,0)=(3cost,3sint,t),t∈R.
(1)
Along v=0,
σu=(−3sinu,3cosu,1),σv=(0,0,1),
(2)
whose span is the tangent plane of the cylinder x2+y2=9. Also
Γ¨(t)=(−3cost,−3sint,0)
(3)
is normal to that cylinder. The same tangency argument proves that Γ is a geodesic of Σ1. It is defined for every t∈R, hence complete, and it is disjoint from γ because their distances from the z-axis are respectively 3 and 1.
