The nth Chebyshev polynomial is defined on [−1,1] by
Tn(x)=cos(narccosx).
(1)
The cosine addition formula gives
T0(x)=1,T1(x)=x,Tn+1(x)=2xTn(x)−Tn−1(x).
(2)
Induction therefore shows that every Tn is a polynomial. Its defining cosine formula also gives
−1≤Tn(x)≤1(−1≤x≤1).
