Substitute the separated solution y=e−αtF(t)sin(nx) into the damped wave equation. Its time derivatives give
ytt+2αyt=e−αt(F′′−α2F)sin(nx),
(1)
whereas yxx=−n2e−αtFsin(nx). Thus
F′′+(n2−α2)F=0,F(0)=0,F′(0)=1.
(2)
The last two conditions follow from y(x,0)=0 and yt(x,0)=sin(nx). For 0<α<n, let ν=n2−α2>0. The simple harmonic motion equation has solution of a differential equation
F(t)=νsin(νt),ν=n2−α2.
(3)
This is an underdamped normal mode: its oscillations have the decaying factor e−αt.
