Let S be the vector subspace of symmetric matrices. A basis consists of Eii for 1≤i≤n and Eij+Eji for i<j, so
dimS=n+(2n)=2n(n+1).
(1)
The dimension formula for a sum of subspaces now gives
dim(V∩S)=dimV+dimS−dim(V+S)≥dimV+2n(n+1)−n2=dimV−(2n)>0.
(2)
Choose 0=A∈V∩S. It belongs to V and is a symmetric matrix, so part (a)(i) makes it a diagonalisable matrix. The preceding example shows that the strict threshold is sharp.
