The Uniform Cauchy criterion says that (fn:E→R) converges uniformly on E if and only if
∀ε>0 ∃N ∀m,n≥N ∀x∈E:∣fn(x)−fm(x)∣<ε.
(1)
For necessity, use the triangle inequality through the uniform limit. For sufficiency, the condition makes (fn(x))n a Cauchy sequence for each x, so completeness of the real numbers defines a pointwise limit f(x). Apply the condition with ε/2 and let m→∞ to obtain ∣fn(x)−f(x)∣≤ε/2<ε uniformly in x.
