Writing f=(f1,…,fm), the jth partial derivative at x is the vector limit
∂jf(x)=limt→0tf(x+tej)−f(x),
(1)
when it exists. The total derivative is a linear map Df(x):Rn→Rm satisfying
f(x+h)=f(x)+Df(x)h+o(∥h∥).
(2)
The Jacobian matrix has entries Jf(x)ij=∂jfi(x). If the total derivative exists, its matrix in the standard bases is precisely Jf(x), because substitution of h=tej identifies every column. Existence of the partial derivatives alone does not in general imply existence of the total derivative.
