The Hartree-Fock method approximates the ground state wavefunction by a single Slater determinant, minimizing the expectation value of the Hamiltonian over its occupied orbitals. It retains fermionic exchange symmetry exactly within that determinant but omits electron correlation beyond a single Slater determinant.
