Write a=∂1f1=∂2f2 and b=∂2f1=−∂1f2. The Cauchy-Riemann equations give
DFx=(a−bba),detDFx=a2+b2.
(1)
Consequently
DFx is invertible exactly when (∂1f1(x),∂2f1(x))=(0,0).
(2)
Equivalently, it is singular exactly when all four partial derivatives vanish. The sum of squares is over R, so no cancellation is possible.
