Backward Euler method has update yn+1=(I−hM)−1yn and amplification eigenvalues g±=(1−hλ±)−1. Hencefor every h≥0. It is therefore unconditionally stable for this linear system. Even with γ=0, it damps every nonzero numerical mode: stability is obtained at the cost of artificial damping and phase error. Large h does not accurately resolve the oscillation period.
∣g±∣2=(1+γh)2+(k2−γ2)h21=1+2γh+k2h21≤1
