Let be a closed subset of the compact space . Express an arbitrary open cover of in its subspace topology as , where the are open sets of . Since is open, the familyis an open cover of . Take a finite subcover and discard if it occurs. The remaining finitely many still cover , since the discarded set contains no point of . Their traces on give the required finite subcover. Hence every closed subset of a compact space is compact, with no Hausdorff assumption.
