For real α, put s=e−2α2 in N(∣α⟩+eiϕ∣−α⟩). Its mean second quadrature is −αssinϕ/(1+scosϕ), which is generally nonzero. Subtracting its square from the second moment gives the displayed variance and squeezing precisely when cosϕ>−s, for nonzero finite amplitude. A useful counterexample to confusing moment and variance is ϕ=π/2.
