If a differentiable dispersion relation ω(k) is homogeneous of degree zero at nonzero k, the Euler homogeneous function theorem gives k⋅∇kω=0. Therefore phase velocity ωk/k2 is orthogonal to group velocity ∇kω. The result applies exactly to limiting inertial waves; finite compressibility can alter the dispersion.
