For positive lapse, eliminating momentum gives (X˙−uX′)2/(2e)−eT2X′2/2. This is the Polyakov action for γab​=(u2−e2T2u​u1​), up to a Weyl transformation. Thus e=1/T,u=0 is conformal gauge.
